I give this book a 3-star only because my son likes to read it…again and again and again and again. I find it really boring, and not very interesting. You spend so much time making silly dog noises that the whole counting idea is forgotten. I will read it to him only if he finds it piled in the bottom of his book bin. But then I will try and hide it again so he won’t find it for another couple of weeks. I know he won’t learn to count from this book. Boynton should have just named it “Doggie Sounds”, and forget about the counting.

This book is funny and probably as good as Boynton’s “Barnyard Dance!”. It is important to have a good counting book for toddlers. Two such excellent books that are aimed at the slightly older toddler are “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss and “One, Two, Three: This Book’s for Me” by Stuart Samuel.

My 2 yr old, who normally loves Boynton’s books, will not even pick this book up. As for a parent who has to read a story over, over again this book is a nightmare!! I am thankful that my son does not like it anymore than I do.

Your baby/toddler/kid will love this book. Love it. S/he will want you to read it over and over again. At first you’ll be over-joyed that your child enjoys a book so much. But then you will come to realize that a book composed of nothing but a cumulative string of barks + toddler who adores repetition = parental insanity. My son loved this book, but it started to drive me mad. So I sent it along to the thrift store and thanked the heavens that young toddlers don’t have good memories. I suggest that before you purchase “Doggies” you think long and hard about whether you really want to spend your time reading the same sequence of barks to a kid who’ll want it over and over and over again.

My daughter loves “doogies” so this book was a great find for us. We throughly enjoy it.
