How can I get my dog to go through the doggy door?

He’s extremely afraid of it. I tried putting cheese on the other side of the door, but he was still too scared to go. I’ve gone through the doggy door and showed him what to do too. He only goes in when I push it open for him. Any tips?

push him through

I dont’t know… it usually is trying to stop the dogs from going out the door…

treats put one treat on one side and they will come

Get a treat he really likes and let him see it. A treat if you don’t have any could be, meat? Anyway put it outside the door and let him get it. Try this a few times, then try it without the treat.

stand at one side of the door with a treat in your hand. by the way cheese will make him give wind. open the flap and hold the treat one side of the door available for him to see so he has to come and get it. do the process daily each time lowering the door a bit. Eventually hopefully he will start touching it more and more! hope this helps!

My sister had this problem wher puppy. The pup would go thru when the door was held open but would not push the flap up & walk thru. So my sister taped the flap open when ever the pup was active & allowed to be outside. Gradually the taped door was lowerd a bit then a bit more over several weeks this took. One day I recieved a msg, “my puppy went thru the doggie door!”

Start from the outside with the door closed. Sit on the ground and gently push your dog through the flap until he is on the inside. Now walk away from the door, but still be where the dog can see you and sit on the ground with your back to him and just start doing things like playing with his toys, singing, moving your arms around, it may take a little bit of time, but your dog will get very curious as to what you are doing especially as he cannot see your face and will start making an effort to try to come through the flap. You may have to try this several times, but it will work. I taught my poodle this way and he was just as scared to begin with also.

Tape the flap up and use treats until he goes thru it without hesitation

Have you tried treats? It worked for my black lab, i would throw treats through the door, while someone was calling to her on the other side, then i lifted up the door so she could see it was an opening and not so scary. Be patient though it may take a few tries. Also (make sure your dog knows that it can get into and out of the doggy door) if your dogs love attention, take its favorite toy, or just everyone in your family and lock him outside, so his only way in is through the door and call like crazy? Otherwise a little push might work !

It’s easier to train a dog to come back into the house through a doggy door than it is to teach them to go outside. Stand on the other side of the door and have their favorite treat (I’d suggest warm chicken bits, the aroma will pull the dog toward the scent) in hand.

You should do the training in stages. First, to build up his confidence, hold the flap up and have him come inside. Repeat this a few times and don’t move on until he is completely comfortable. Then, repeat the exercise with the flap halfway up, followed by a quarter way up. After that, just hold up a corner of the flap and have him push through. As soon as he does it, celebrate! Give him plenty of praise, play with his favorite toy for a bit. Then, you can start teaching him to exit through the doggy door into the yard using the same method and steps.

Patience and persistence will be key to successful doggy door training. Best of luck.

put him outside and talk to him from inside ,he is more likely to come in than go out to start with, when you have that cracked try standing outside and doing the same

Well we had this problem for our dog except he wasn’t scared he just didn’t get the concept. What we did was we would have a person on each side with few treats and then the person on the outside would stick there hand through the doggy door with a treat and say “Frisbee” (that’s my dog’s name) and they would just keep trying to lure him through and the person on the inside could give his bottom a VERY LITTLE push and then once he went through it that person gave him lots of love and praised him then the person on the inside did the same thing they got a treat and lured him until he went through and then the person on that side gave him praise and sometimes we would hold the door open for him but just make sure that you hold the door the way you want your dog to go. Eventually my dog got used to it and now he goes in and out as he pleases(except at night of course). I hope this helps you!! Good Luck just keep working with him and he’ll get it eventually.

Hope this Helps!! =)

If you have shown your puppy how the door works and he goes through it when you hold it open for him then all you need to do is give him a little time to try it on his own. Some dogs are afraid of new things, just like some people. Eventually his curiosity will get the better of him and his desire to go out or come in will win out over his fear. He just needs a little time. Don’t make a big deal about it, that will only make him more nervous.

you can try rubbing it with something that smells yummy, or hold a treat on the other side of the door and coax her into it

You have the right idea to stay outside the door with a doggie treat that he can smell but you have to do this over and over again until he gets it. Put the treat on a long stick, go outside the doggie door, let him see if, and as he approaches the door from the inside, pull the treat through the door so he will go through the door after it.

Have him stay outside, put a trail of his favorite treats in a line through the doggy door, some how prop the flap to the doggy door open and leave it be.

If this does work without pushing him, you push him he will never get used to it. They have to see that there is no trap or anything that will hurt him on the other side. Pushing him will never work!

But if it does work continue doing this, and when he does eventually do it, praise him and give him the same treat.

Continue doing this for a few days then introduce a sound command such as come here and whistle. Eventually thin out the treats and this will replace any negative thoughts, just depends how long you’ll have to do this with how long you’ve been pushing him.
